Massage Therapy
(Definition per the Code of Virginia 54.1-3000) Massage therapy “means the treatment of soft tissues for therapeutic purposes by the application of massage and bodywork techniques based on the manipulation or application of pressure to the muscular structure or soft tissues of the human body.”

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, Massage Therapists are licensed as Certified Massage Therapists or CMTs.  At this time, state licensing is title protection, and entirely optional.  In Maryland, massage therapists are called Licensed Massage Therapists, or LMTs.  I am licensed both as a Virginia Certified Massage Therapist and as a Maryland Licensed Massage Therapist.  All massage providers in Maryland must be either LMTs or Registered Massage Practitioners (RMPs).  The main difference between the two is that only LMTs can work in medical settings.  Both are required to graduate from approved massage training programs and take continuing education courses.  In Virginia one can't be certain of a massage provider's training without the use of the words therapy or therapist, so to ensure superior service, I encourage you to choose a licensed massage therapist.  Several reputable therapist search engines are located on my links page.

Bodywork
Bodywork, as used in the touch therapies context, applies to techniques and modalities which are related to massage, yet are not the same in application or intent.  There are many people who are not massage therapists who offer bodywork, such as Craniosacral Therapy (which I personally do not offer, as I have not trained in it.)  In addition to the modalities listed below, I have had training in a number of other techniques which require professional affiliations to mention in print or text.  If you would like more information about them, please email me at jeanne@tyrmassage.com or call or text to (434)989-8364.

Swedish Massage
Five basic massage techniques with the intention of moving fluids throughout the body comprise Swedish Massage.  It is the general “relaxation massage.”  Full-body sessions are usually Swedish with deep tissue massage used on areas where more tension is held.  If you wish to lie on the table for an hour and do nothing, Swedish is probably your best bet.  I'll ask you to change position (from lying on your back to lying on your stomach or vice versa) once, maybe twice, but that's it.

Deep Tissue Massage
This is the work for which I am best known. Deep tissue massage uses some strokes that are modified from Swedish massage techniques, and some strokes that are completely different.  I've specialized in deep tissue massage therapy for most of my massage career.  As the name implies, the pressure is much deeper than with Swedish massage although this might not translate to "a lot of pressure."  The intent of deep tissue massage is primarily to lengthen muscle fibers, ease congestion, break up adhesions, and release toxins.  Depending on the amount of tension in your muscles, your “tolerance” for depth may vary from session to session.

The same person is never exactly the same from one session to the next, so during a deep tissue session, I will ask for more feedback.  I may ask you to deepen your breathing, lift some part of your body against my hand, or to stretch.  I may also ask you to do nothing, which is more difficult than it sounds.  Deep tissue massage is more effective than Swedish massage for relieving aches and pains, but it requires you, the client, to take a more active role in the session.  Contrary to popular belief, deep tissue massage should not be painful.  The "no pain, no gain" theory is counter-productive and deep tissue work is done effectively when the muscle tissue is properly warmed up prior to deep compressions and glides.

Circuitry Alignment
Circuitry Alignment is a hands-on energy technique that brings your original potential more directly into your body.  It was first offered in October, 2005, and I received my training as a Circuitry Alignment Facilitator in February, 2006.  Circuitry Alignment is done with clothing on and can be done in person or remotely.  It usually takes about two hours.  I am currently the only Circuitry Alignment Facilitator in Charlottesville.  More information about Circuitry Alignment is available on my Circuitry Alignment page and at the Soul Support Systems website.

Heart Thread
Heart Thread bridges your body's own consciousness with your conscious awareness to promote your self-authority.  It is a seated, clothing-on modality that can also be done remotely.  By working with patterns held in your back, we release muscle tension as well as mind chatter so you are more able to feel your own unique vibration.  Heart Thread blends very easily with massage, and may be combined with other modalities at my usual hourly rate.  More information about Heart Thread is available on my Heart Thread page as well as the Soul Support Systems Heart Thread page.  The open community blog for Heart Thread can be found at WordPress.

Seated Massage
Seated massage does not require removal of any clothing (although most people choose to remove suit jackets.)  It is brief, but effective, which increases productivity while reducing stress, aches, and pains.  Sessions last from 10 to 30 minutes and, as always, are tailored to each individual's needs.  Seated massage is convenient in the office, at parties, and other special events.  For further information, contact me at 434-989-8364 or at jeanne@tyrmassage.com.

Basic Connective Tissue Massage
I have received basic training in connective tissue massage. Connective tissue massage focuses on releasing myofascial restrictions by addressing the tissues that provide support for the muscles and tendons, rather than the muscles themselves.  It is often confused with myofacial release because it also delibertely addresses fascia, but is a different technique entirely.  Most people aren't interested in a session exclusively of connective tissue massage, but it's an ideal technique when the muscles are being constricted by the fascia surrounding them.  One common analogy is that muscles can't experience being loose if the 'sausage casing' around them is tight.

Gift Certificates and Package Deals
I also offer gift certificates at the same cost as a massage session.  Massage gift certificates are available year 'round for any occasion either singly or buy five and get one free.  To order, email me at jeanne@tyrmassage.com or call or text 434-989-8364.  If it's easier for you, we can handle the entire transaction over the phone, including payment with a credit or debit card, and I can mail the massage gift certificate for you.  After all, giving the gift of massage should be as easy as receiving one!  Gift certificates are available for all Treat Yourself Right services.

Office Sessions
I offer 30-, 60-, 90-, and 120-minute sessions in my office near Barracks Road Shopping Center at 1982 Arlington Blvd., Suite 1 in Charlottesville.  My table is ADA compliant.  Please see my rates section below for my fee schedule.  Here is a link to a map of the area.  Please note, all sessions are by appointment only.  You can book online, call or text 434-989-8364, or email me at jeanne@tyrmassage.com. My general office hours schedule can be found at www.tyrmassage.com/location-and-hours.

Remote Sessions
If you're thinking about receiving energy work, you might want to consider receiving the work remotely.  Receiving work in your home can save you driving time and offer you control over your surroundings, especially when the session is complete and you want to continue to relax.  It is also a wonderful option if you do not live in the Charlottesville area and would like to benefit from one or more of the energy work modalities I can offer.  I realize receiving energy work remotely may seem like a bit of a stretch for some people.  I used to be skeptical about energy work in general and remote sessions in particular, and I have both given and received every remote modality I offer.  I have found each one consistently to be as effective as sessions done in person.  You can find out more about remote sessions at
www.tyrmassage.com/remote

Mobile Service
I do offer mobile service, but only for people who are medically disabled or for special events.  For those unable to access my office, the mobile service fee may be may waived.  If you simply prefer the convenience of receiving massage in your home (and good for you for knowing what you want) there are many massage providers in Charlottesville and the surrounding area who do not maintain offices and will be probably be happy to travel to your home.  My
links page has several reputable massage therapist search engines listed.  Please email me or call me at 434-989-8364 if you have any questions.

Massage Parties
Speaking of mobile service, I am available for massage parties with sufficient notice.  It's like a day at the massage office for you and your friends right in your own home.  Depending on the number of people involved, discounts may be available.  For this service, it's best to have at least four weeks' notice, in case I need to arrange to bring another Certified Massage Therapist with me and so you and I both can approve the contract.  Please consider adding massage for pre-wedding events, reunions, girls' night in, or just to Treat Yourself (and your friends and family) Right!

Massage Tutoring
I offer tutoring in my office as well as in-home tutoring for two or more people, up to six.  I present basic anatomy of the areas of focus requested, basic massage strokes, body mechanics for maximum effectiveness, and hands-on practice.  Includes handouts and specific, practical suggestions on how you can improve your own home massage technique.

We work with equipment you are likely to have in your home (or in a hotel room, airport waiting area, etc.) so you can use massage to decrease stress and muscle soreness at those times you need it most.  This workshop requires an even number of participants. Consider signing up your spouse, partner, or a friend when you sign up.  To ensure an even number of people, I may bring in a colleague to co-facilitate the workshop.

Massage Techniques for Personal Use
This workshop is custom-designed for each group it is presented to.  As with massage tutoring, I present basic anatomy of the areas of focus, basic massage strokes, body mechanics for maximum effectiveness, and hands-on practice.  Individualized attention is provided so you can most effectively massage your friends and family at home.  Please note, this is not a substitute for a full massage therapy training program.

This workshop is available for groups and to the community in general.  The rate varies depending on the venue and number of people participating.  If you would like to be advised of the next Massage Techniques for Personal Use workshop, please feel free to contact me at 434-989-8364 or by email at jeanne@tyrmassage.com.  As with all Treat Yourself Right! services, this workshop is non-sexual.

Angel Light Healing
Angel Light Healing is a gift from spirit that is to be given freely.  I was activated into Angel Light Healing during a class at the
LaHo-Chi Institute and have found it to be an energetic healing technique that brings results.  I am available for Angel Light Healing activaions and circles by pre-arrangement.
